Fall is flying by!

I’ve been MIA from CdC this past month as business has been insanely busy. Being self-employed, there are ups and downs; sometimes business is too slow and other times I’m running a marathon. It’s definitely been the latter lately. I’ve had a multitude of diverse and overlapping projects since my last entry; producing and styling a shoot for Fashion Magazine on fall makeup trends, outfitting new hosts for a television show and their promo shoot, consulting, shopping and putting together looks for the special election night coverage on CBC, wardrobe styling a commercial, styling a photo shoot for a custom holiday magazine and overseeing the creation of a glamorous one-of-a kind gown for one of my clients! Whew, all the while binge watching 5 seasons of Game of Thrones with my husband, I’m addicted I tell ya, addicted. I almost forgot to mention, I also escaped for one weekend with my hubby and hid out in Old Montreal too. What a gorgeous autumn we’re having, the leaves are falling and Christmas is in the air…. …

A Saint of a Sale

Photo: AllSaints When AllSaints made their Canadian debut in Yorkdale Mall a couple of years ago, it was a dream come true for me. The British retailer’s wares are completely up my alley; a little bit edgy, directional designs, quality fabrics and construction at a mid-range price point (somewhere between fast fashion & designer). The line is so me, it’s a bit frightening, and I always see some men’s pieces that I want to get my stylish husband. Although the target demographic for AllSaints is the 18-35 year old set, it appeals to women of all ages, and looks great on them too! The AllSaints Mid Season Sale is on, in store and online (free standard shipping in Canada and the US), so I’ve rounded up my favourite sale pieces along with some of their regular priced items, and a few items from other stores, to show you what I would coordinate them with. All prices shown are in Canadian dollars, unless otherwise specified. Click on photos to link to the corresponding websites. THE ROCKER LOOK   THE DRESSY LOOK   THE …

Spring into Colour!

All mood boards by trendcouncil.com With April here, the shops are finally stocked with an abundant of colourful wares, for spring in a profusion of soothing pastels and happy brights. Now is the perfect time to shop for a few fresh items but with so many beautiful colours to choose from, how do you make sure to pick the ones that best complement your skin tone? First you need to determine if you have a warm or cool skin tone. Do your skin, eyes, and face look better in bright white and black hues, or ivory, off-whites, and brown/tan shades? The former means you’re probably cool-toned, and the latter, warm. Consult the warm/cool colour palettes below for which colours will look best on you. If you don’t have time to shop in the stores, I’ve included 12 effortless spring dresses in a range of styles, colours and prices points available online. Just click on the photos to be linked to the websites.

Fabulous nails fast!

Photo: Michael Williams for Revlon Since having a child, doing my own manicure has become a disastrous affair. My application is messy because I’m out of practice, and I always smudge and ruin my nails before they are fully dry. I’m guessing most busy women don’t have the time to do their own nails. Until now! I love Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy. First you get the look and finish of a salon gel manicure without the expense. Second, as it’s a nail polish and base coat in one, you save time because you don’t have to apply a base and wait for it to dry before applying a colour coat. The polish is opaque, so had I applied my first coat a bit thicker I may have been able to get away with only one coat, more time saved! Third, it’s super easy to apply and control, because it has a thick brush which kind of looks like two brushes side-by-side. Fourth, the coat on my first hand was dry by the time I had …

Psst! Wanna know about some great deals?

Photo: pixshark.com As you probably already know, I shop the brick and mortar stores regularly (it’s my job), but what you might not know is that I’m also a very active shopper on the internet, even if it’s mainly window shopping (it’s my job, really!). I subscribe to emails from retailers who’s prices are usually beyond my reach like Net-a-Porter and the retailers I regularly shop, to be kept in the loop for sales, because who doesn’t want a good deal? Somewhere between the start of the new year and when the spring weather kicks in (when, oh when?) is when the biggest savings are to be had on the retail front. If you want to benefit from these big savings you better get your shopping shoes on or get yourself online and pullout your credit card fast, because the biggest saving are on now! Here are a few you may be interested in. For you gentlemen, the Bay is having a menswear “Buy More, Save More” sale on regular priced shirts and ties. Buy …

The Future of Fashion

I’m a big fan of the website design-milk.com and have been an avid reader and subscriber for some time. Today’s post, written by Caroline Williamson, absolutely blew me away, and got me so excited that I have to share it with you. I have seen some amazing clothing in the past couple of years designed and made by a 3D printer. For all of their beauty and intricate design, they have been rigid, sculptural and very armour like; in other words, not wearable. In today’s Design Milk post, I have seen what the future of fashion can look like, and it’s exciting. I’ve always been interested in how technology can advance the properties of clothing design, but that’s a whole other discussion for another post. Nervous System is a studio out of Massachusetts, that combines science, art, and technology to create their designs. Their latest project used Kinematics – their 4D printing system that creates complex, foldable forms composed of articulated nylon modules – to make a dress. The system provides a way to turn any three-dimensional …

How To Choose Necklaces for Necklines

I stumbled upon this great chart the other day on Tumbler that does a pretty good job of illustrating which necklaces work with what necklines. It’s no wonder then, one of the most often asked questions from my clients is, which necklace should I wear with what neckline? Mismatched necklaces to necklines is one of the most practiced fashion faux pas I see daily. In reality it’s quite simple to master, it’s all about visual proportion and spacing. This chart is an excellent start to understanding what works well, and I’ve added some more examples here below. Collar necklaces like the one below should be worn with crew necklines and should sit right on top the neckline opening. Pendant necklaces look best worn equal distance between the neckline and the waistline. How to wear multiple chain necklaces may seem tricky to master but it’s simply about creating visual balance between neckline and waistline of the dress. A larger and longer necklace is best suited to a very plain garment as it fills empty space and adds visual interest …

The Perfect Pencil Skirt

Banana Republic black ponte pencil skirt, $110 CAD. Click on link to buy this skirt. Photos: Banana Republic. I came across this fantastic skirt while shopping with a client a few weeks ago. It was so fabulous in fact, I went back to buy it for myself the very next day! A well fitting black pencil skirt is a basic every women should have as a staple in her wardrobe. It’s always in style, a good separate for coordinating with just about anything and adds a polished look to any outfit. As you can imagine, I am often on the lookout for a good pencil skirt for my clients. This skirt from Banana Republic is high waisted and tapers narrower at the hem, which gives the illusion of a longer leaner silhouette. Who wouldn’t want that? It’s also cut and constructed well with a vented back hem, allowing for unrestricted walking so you get the narrow look without having to hobble.  One of the best features about this pencil skirt besides the great fit is that it’s constructed in a flattering Ponte knit. …

Gel Envy

Photo: Revlon Long wear nail enamel, too good to be true? I’ve styled some Revlon Nail campaigns and the last shoot was for the new Revlon Colourstay Gel Envy. While Photographer Michael Williams was shooting away, award-winning top manicurist Leeanne Colley of Tips Nail Bar gave me a demo. No base coat necessary, primer and colour in one stroke. It dried much more quickly than traditional nail polish and had a super high gloss shine like gel nail polishes. Win, win, win! I bought a bottle at Shoppers Drugmart the other day and can wait to test drive it. I’ll let you know how it goes. Below are some photos from shoot day including close-ups of the gorgeous clothing I pulled for the shoot, a look behind-the-scenes.
